Build a Bootable Windows CD
N2U Productions' PE Builder

PE Builder from N2U Productions (Bart Lagerweij)helps you build a Bart Preinstalled Environment (BartPE) bootable Windows CD or DVD from the original Windows XP or Windows Server 2003 installation/setup CD. The software doesn't require Microsoft Windows Preinstallation Environment (WinPE). The software will provide you a complete Win32 environment with network support, a GUI, and FAT/NTFS/CDFS file system support. The PE Builder program runs on Windows 2003/XP/2000 but doesn't support Windows Me/NT/9x systems.

John Allhiser of Kansas City, Missouri, provides high praise for PE Builder. He says, "I have used Bart's boot disks since 1996. Now Bart has created a customizable program similar to the OEM WinPE software that lets you create a custom ISO image with plug-ins. Once the ISO is configured, you can burn the image to a CD for recovery or installation purposes."

Remotely Control Any Machine
DameWare Development's Mini Remote Control

Mini Remote Control from DameWare Development provides on-the-fly deployment of its client agent service to remote machines so you don't have to physically visit the remote machine to install software. You can remotely control any machine on the LAN or WAN in just a few seconds. Unlike other remote control programs, the Mini Remote Control client agent doesn't install low-level drivers or replace any existing OS drivers, thus eliminating a reboot of the remote machine when connecting. The software features extensive encryption and security features. You have the option to encrypt all communications between the remote and local machines. DameWare Development refers to the product as "mini" because Mini Remote Control is considered to be lightweight and independent when you use Microsoft Windows SPI calls to interact with local and remote machines, Pricing starts at $89.95.

Ronnie Sutton uses Mini Remote Control and finds it very useful.-He says, "I'm a huge fan of Mini Remote Control. I support approximately 450 PCs, 20 percent of which are vacant. There's not much this tool can't do. If I want to change my company's legal notice, I can change all 450 machines in less than 5 minutes. Mini Remote Control is great. It can handle registry hacks, service install and control, event log viewing, and remote control."

Detect and Block Spam
Vircom's ModusGate

Jennifer Mocherman of Bryan, Ohio, has recommended ModusGate from Vircom as a product that she can't do without. She says, "I found a product that has helped tremendously with our spam problem: Vircom's ModusGate. I previously tested 3 other products, and ModusGate was by far the best! The program runs on its own server so I don't have to worry about mail getting to my Exchange server. ModusGate sends every user a report in the morning to review what they have in quarantine, which saves me a lot of time because I no longer have to manage the quarantine. If a user finds an email on the report that he wants, he just clicks the recovery button and the software will release the message. Modus-Gate also gives users the option to add the address to their white list. The software does a very good job at detecting spam and has a very low false-positive rate. I also have the ability to add a script to block spam that might get through. I also use ModusGate to quarantine executable attachments. Compared to the other products I tested, ModusGate did everything I needed it to without me spending a lot of time managing it."

ModusGate is an email management gateway solution that sits in the front of any network server. You can access ModusGate remotely and through its Web-based console. Features include a nine-layer perimeter defense that prevents spam-and email-borne threats from jeopardizing your network and consuming your resources. Contact Vircom for pricing.

Scrutinize Your Company's Email System
IntelliReach's Content Inspector

IntelliReach's Content Inspector is a content policy-and discovery-tool that lets you view and scrutinize your company's email system. Content Inspector lets you look into all or part of the email system either for requests made during legal or human resource investigations or to audit and enforce email policies. While keeping all actions invisible to users, Content Inspector can scan every folder in every mailbox as well as thousands of messages and attachments per hour. Content Inspector also maintains an audit of all actions and lets you export the findings to formats that suit your company's legal or backup needs.

Robert C. Thompson wrote to us to commend Content Inspector-from IntelliReach. He says, "Content Inspector allows case-sensitive keyword searches of the entire Exchange information store. The software will search the Inbox, Calendar, Contacts, Deleted Items, Drafts, Journal, Notes, Outbox, Sent Items, Tasks and subfolders. The software can go even further and search within the message body, subject, To/From/CC line, and the name of any attachments. You can specify a date range and define one of three actions to take on messages that meet the criteria: Delete the attachment, delete the message, or forward a copy of the message for review. Content Inspector is handy for doing keyword searches on topics for legal folks, removing viruses or spam across the organization, or just plain snooping around."
