Congratulations to the winners of our April 2008 Reader Challenge. First prize, a copy of “Windows Vista in a Nutshell,” published by O'Reilly Media (www.ora.com), goes to Nicole Bakos, of New Jersey. Second prize goes to Eric McDonald, of Illinois, who asked for a copy of “Running QuickBooks in Nonprofits,” from CPA911 Publishing.

How Reader Challenge Works

Solve this month's Vista Update challenge, and you might win a prize! Email your solution (don't use an attachment) to challenge@windowsitpro.com by May 8, 2008. You MUST include your full name, street mailing address (no P.O. Boxes), and a telephone number. Without that information, we can't send you a prize if you win, so your answer is eliminated, even if it’s correct.

I choose winners at random from the pool of correct entries. I’m a sucker for humor and originality, and a cleverly written correct answer gets an extra chance. Because I receive so many entries each month, I can't reply to respondents, and I never respond to a request for an email receipt. Look for the solutions to this month's problem at http://www.windowsitpro.com/articles/index.cfm?articleid=99008 on May 9, 2008.

Take the May 2008 Challenge

Last month's Reader Challenge on the administrator account prompted quite a bit of email in addition to contest entries. Many of you wrote to ask questions about administering accounts.

Over the (many many) years I've been writing articles for Windows IT Pro Magazine and its newsletters, I've often mentioned that I'm a command-line freak. Many administrative chores are faster and easier if you perform those actions from the command line.

Quite a few email messages I received after last month's Reader Challenge asked me for advice about command-line tasks related to user administration that failed. I wrote back, asking "Does the user name have a space"? This month's Reader Challenge is related to user administration tasks, including at least one question connected to the question I asked my correspondents.

Question #1: When a user name has a space, which of the following formats are required when that user name is used in a command:

A. An underscore must replace the space.
B. The space remains, but the entire name must be enclosed in quotes.
C. Either A or B works.

Question #2: If you enter a full name in the Full Name field, that full name can have a space without causing any problems for command-line actions.

A. True
B. False

Question #3: When you create a new user, you can only enter a full name in addition to the user name in the User Management Console, not in the Create Users GUI in Control Panel.

A. True
B. False

The Answers: 1: B 2: A 3. A
